Background
In February 2012 the Mayor of London established the London Enterprise Panel, the local enterprise partnership for Greater London. The Panel is co-chaired by Harvey McGrath, former chairman of Prudential plc and the London Development Agency, and Kit Malthouse, the Deputy Mayor for Business & Enterprise. Its membership is formed of senior representatives of London’s business community and three borough leaders representing London Councils.
The purpose of the London Enterprise Panel is to advise the Mayor of London on action to:
- Provide strategic investment to support private sector growth and employment;
- Promote enterprise and innovation and the acquisition of skills for sustained employment in London;
- Protect and enhance London’s competitiveness.
The Panel has also established a Skills & Employment Working Group which includes co-opted members from a range of key stakeholder groups including the further and higher education sectors, Jobcentre Plus, business bodies, Work Programme providers and the voluntary and community sector.
Consistent with London’s unique governance arrangements, the Panel’s role will not be the same as that of other local enterprise partnerships. For example, In London, the functions of the London Development Agency are being folded into the GLA. The Panel will therefore have an advisory role and work within the framework set by the London Plan and other Mayoral strategies.
Further information on the London Enterprise Panel, including full membership, meeting papers and details of the Panel’s Skills & Employment Working Group can be found at www.london.gov.uk/londonenterprisepanel.
