Audience: Strategic directors and senior researchers from Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEP), Local Authorities (LA), colleges and other relevant bodies using local and regional LMI (regional/local bodies, think tanks, academics, employer representative groups and skills observatories etc)

Aim: The aim of the event is to raise awareness and use of the UK Commission’s available local data. This specifically covers the UK Commission's Employer Skills Survey 2011 and Labour Market projections for LEP areas from Working Futures 2010-2020. As local level data at LEA and LEP is provided by these huge and high profile sources we are also seeking to:

  • promote the comparability of the data provided by these sources which enables benchmarking across areas
  • prevent duplication of primary research and burden on business by raising awareness of the data available
  • maximise the value for money gained from this key government research

 

Background:

UK Commission's Employer Skills Survey

The UK Commission’s Employer Skills Survey 2011 is one of the largest employer skills surveys in the world, involving over 87,500 employers, and is the first to harmonise data from across the UK to provide comparable information at the UK level. It asks employers about the skills deficiencies they experience and the training they fund and arrange for their staff. Significant amounts of data and information are available at the LEA and LEP level on a comparable basis across the whole of England.

Working Futures is the most detailed and comprehensive set of projections of the UK labour market that is available.  It provides an insight into potential future employment and skill needs arising out of the evolving industrial and occupational structure of jobs between 2010 and 2020.  Results are now available cut by Local Enterprise Partnership area and provide a key resource in assessing local labour market priorities.

  • Welcome and an introduction to our local data resources by Neil McLean, Commissioner at UK Commission for Employment and Skills and Chair of Leeds City LEP
  • Response from local stakeholders
  • An overview of the potential of the data to aid local areas
  • Accessing and using the data
  • Q and A session via a panel discussion including local stakeholders and experts

NB - We are also expecting ministerial attendance to give a government perspective
