David Frost Comments on Lord Heseltine Review

" This reaches you from Birmingham on the day that Lord Heseltine launched his Growth Review - "No stone unturned".

It is quite clear from both the report and his speech, that LEPs are being placed centre stage in his vision of how we stimulate growth at a local level.

As he says in the report local places need to be empowered by letting them take the initiative to generate local growth and that incentives and structures of local places are organised in such a way as to secure the greatest possible economic contribution. LEPs are seen as core to this.

I have to say the positive way that LEPs have been positioned is due to the not inconsiderable work by a number of people since Lord Heseltine met with the LEP Chairs in Birmingham in mid-July.

A number of meetings have been held with Lord Heseltine and his team outlining the contribution and commitment that LEP Boards are prepared to make to radically improve their local economies.

The response to his report from the LEP Network and wider has been extrordiarily positive and it is quite clear that LEPs are prepared to meet the challenges that have been laid out.

The issue is how we now start to shape the response to this report. The LEP network cannot simply stand back from what will be an intense period of activity."
